Tips For Healing Cracked Nipples
Cracked or sore nipples are something that many breastfeeding moms experience at some point in their breastfeeding journey. While cracked or sore nipples are unpleasant, they are relatively common. Today we are here to give you some tips for healing cracked nipples.
Tips during breastfeeding that can help
While each situation is unique, here are some tips that can help to prevent further cracking while breastfeeding your baby. It is important to note that each case is different, and if cracked nipples don’t begin to improve in a few days, a visit with a lactation consultant is recommended.
- Start your babies feed on the least sore or cracked side. Babies have a stronger letdown when starting their feed, and typically ease up after feeding on one side.
- You can try a nipple shield, which adds a layer of protection for your cracked nipple during feedings.
- Try experimenting with different breastfeeding positions and making sure that your baby is latching properly.
Tips that can help after feedings
Below are tips that can help to soothe your nipples and continue the healing process after and between feedings!
- Once you are done feeding your baby be sure to let your nipple dry completely before putting your breasts back in a nursing bra. Moist nipples can rub on fabric and become more irritated.
- Try a saline rinse to help soothe and moisten cracked nipples.
- After a saline rinse, apply a small amount of breastmilk to your cracked nipples as this can help soothe and heal the skin as well. Yes, breastmilk can be that powerful!
Helpful tips for between feedings
- Try to keep your nipples uncovered and exposed to air as much as possible
- Keep your nipples clean, you can do this by gently washing them in or out of the shower once daily with a gentle soap.
- You can try applying a soothing and healing balm to your nipples.
Meet with a lactation consultant
Typically we see sore or cracked nipples after the first month of childbirth. Cracked or damaged nipples are usually from an improper latch or breastfeeding position. A meeting with a lactation consultant can help check and address any issues that may be going on. It is very common for new lactating parents to have minor problems arise at the beginning of a breastfeeding journey, and lactation consultants can be a great help in finding a solution!
