Should We Get the SNOO?

With so many baby items and gadgets on the market, knowing which products would benefit your family and baby postpartum can be hard. Like all consumer markets, the baby industry has many product trends, and the SNOO is trending! Are you curious if the SNOO is a good choice for your family? While Bay City Doulas doesn’t have an affiliation with the SNOO, we have worked closely with many families who use this product, so let’s dive into this week’s blog. Should we get the SNOO?

What is a SNOO?
The SNOO was created by the brand Happiest Baby, which claims that the device is the smartest and safest baby bed ever made. It was made to replicate the snug feeling that a newborn feels while in the womb or being held, to help babies and families sleep better. The SNOO has a built-in swaddle and will jiggle and shush your baby when they begin to stir. There is also a built-in swaddle blanket to help your newborn feel snug. The SNOO automatically detects baby cries and takes action to help soothe a sleeping baby back to sleep.
Who invented the SNOO?
Dr. Harvey Karp, author of Happiest Baby on the Block and creator of the 5 S’s for soothing babies is who invented the SNOO. To create the SNOO, Dr. Karp took his infant sleeping and infant soothing knowledge and applied it to the device. The 5 S’s are swaddle, side or stomach position, shush, swing, and suck. The SNOO replicates three of these motions, swaddle, suck, and swing.
